The integration of distributed energy resources and renewable energies intothe energy system is increasing, and in Germany, the Marktstammdatenregister(MaStR) serves as a central registry for energy data. This register contains acomprehensive data set of master data of the German energy system. Thereliability of the data is critical for the registry's usability, but fewvalidation studies have been published. In this work we provide a review ofexisting literature that relies on unit location data and shows the registry'simportance. We then validate the geographic coordinates by analyzing itscompleteness and consistency with associated regional information. Throughrigorous manual validation using aerial images, we identify common reasons oflocation inaccuracies and find 15% of PV systems and 8% of onshore windturbines registered at the wrong coordinates. This work contributes to areliable data foundation for the German energy system and starts off an openvalidation process of the Marktstammdatenregister from an academic perspective.
