Models with several levels of mixing (households, workplaces), as well asvarious corresponding formulations for $R_0$, have been proposed in theliterature. However, little attention has been paid to the impact of thedistribution of the population size within social structures, effect that canhelp plan effective interventions. We focus on the influence on the modeloutcomes of teleworking strategies, consisting in reshaping the distribution ofworkplace sizes. We consider a stochastic \emph{SIR} model with two levels ofmixing, accounting for a uniformly mixing general population, each individualbelonging also to a household and a workplace. The variance of the workplacesize distribution appears to be a good proxy for the impact of thisdistribution on key outcomes of the epidemic, such as epidemic size and peak.In particular, our findings suggest that strategies where the proportion ofindividuals teleworking depends sublinearly on the size of the workplaceoutperform the strategy with linear dependence. Besides, one drawback of themodel with multiple levels of mixing is its complexity, raising interest in areduced model. We propose an unstructured \emph{SIR} ODE-based model,explicitly exhibiting social structure sizes. This reduced model, sharing thesame growth rate as the initial model, yields a generally satisfyingapproximation of the epidemic. These results, robust to various changes inmodel structure, are very promising from the perspective of implementingeffective strategies based on social distancing of specific contacts.Furthermore, they contribute to the effort of building relevant approximationsof individual based models at intermediate scales.
