Grid-centric perception is a crucial field for mobile robot perception andnavigation. Nonetheless, grid-centric perception is less prevalent thanobject-centric perception for autonomous driving as autonomous vehicles need toaccurately perceive highly dynamic, large-scale outdoor traffic scenarios andthe complexity and computational costs of grid-centric perception are high. Therapid development of deep learning techniques and hardware gives fresh insightsinto the evolution of grid-centric perception and enables the deployment ofmany real-time algorithms. Current industrial and academic researchdemonstrates the great advantages of grid-centric perception, such ascomprehensive fine-grained environmental representation, greater robustness toocclusion, more efficient sensor fusion, and safer planning policies. Given thelack of current surveys for this rapidly expanding field, we present ahierarchically-structured review of grid-centric perception for autonomousvehicles. We organize previous and current knowledge of occupancy gridtechniques and provide a systematic in-depth analysis of algorithms in terms ofthree aspects: feature representation, data utility, and applications inautonomous driving systems. Lastly, we present a summary of the currentresearch trend and provide some probable future outlooks.
