Marine shells are designed by nature to ensure mechanical protection frompredators and shelter for mollusks living inside them. A large amount of workhas been done to study the multiscale mechanical properties of their complexmicrostructure and to draw inspiration for the design of impact-resistantbiomimetic materials. Less is known regarding the dynamic behavior related totheir structure at multiple scales. Here, we present a combined experimentaland numerical study of the shells of two different species of gastropod seasnail belonging to the Turritellidae family, featuring a peculiar helicoconicshape with hierarchical spiral elements. The proposed procedure involves theuse of micro-Computed Tomography scans for the accurate determination ofgeometry, Atomic Force Microscopy and Nanoindentation to evaluate localmechanical properties, surface morphology and heterogeneity, as well asResonant Ultrasound Spectroscopy coupled with Finite Element Analysissimulations to determine global modal behavior. Results indicate that thespecific features of the considered shells, in particular their helicoconic andhierarchical structure, can also be linked to their vibration attenuationbehavior. Moreover, the proposed investigation method can be extended to thestudy of other natural systems, to determine their structure-related dynamicproperties, ultimately aiding the design of bioinspired metamaterials and ofstructures with advanced vibration control.
