The understanding of neural networks as neuron-synapse binaries has been thefoundation of neuroscience, and therefore, the emerging neuromorphic computingtechnology that takes inspiration from the brain. This dogma, however, has beenincreasingly challenged by recent neuroscience research in which the downplayeddendrites were found to be active, dynamically unique and computationallypowerful. To date, research on artificial dendrites is scarce and the fewexisting devices are still far from versatile or (and) bio-realistic. Abreakthrough is hampered by the limited available physical mechanisms inmainstream device architectures. Here, we experimentally demonstrate abio-realistic and versatile artificial dendrite made of WSe2/MoS2heterojunction-channel anti-ambipolar transistor, which can closely mimic theexperimentally recorded non-monotonic dendritic Ca2+ action potential thatunderpins various sophisticated computations. Spiking neural networksimulations reveal that the incorporation of this nonconventional butbio-realistic dendritic activation enhances the robustness and representationalcapability of the network in non-stationary environments. By further exploitingthe memristive effect, dendritic anti-ambipolar transistor can naturally mimicCa2+-mediated regulation of synaptic plasticity (meta-plasticity) at dendriticspine, an important homeostatic phenomenon due to dendritic modulation. Theinvention of dendritic anti-ambipolar transistor completes the family ofneuromorphic transistors and represents a major advance in diversifying thefunctionality of transistors.
