Microfluidic channels with embedded ion permselective medium under theapplication of electric current are commonly used for electrokinetic processesas on-chip ion concentration polarization (ICP) and bioparticlepreconcentration to enhance biosensing. Herein, we demonstrate the ability todynamically control the electrically driven ion transport by integratingindividually addressable microvalves. The microvalves are located along a mainmicrochannel that is uniformly coated with a thin layer of an ion-exchangemembrane (IEM). The interplay of ionic transport between the solution withinthe microchannel and the thin IEM, under an applied electric current, can belocally tuned by the deformation of the microvalve. This tunability provides arobust and simple means of implementing new functionalities into lab-on-a-chipdevices, e.g., dynamic control over multiple ICP layers and their associatedpreconcentrated molecule plugs, multiplex sensing, suppression of biofouling aswell as plug dispersion, while maintaining the well-known application ofmicrovalves as steric filtration.
