Dialogue systems capable of social influence such as persuasion, negotiation,and therapy, are essential for extending the use of technology to numerousrealistic scenarios. However, existing research primarily focuses on eithertask-oriented or open-domain scenarios, a categorization that has beeninadequate for capturing influence skills systematically. There exists noformal definition or category for dialogue systems with these skills anddata-driven efforts in this direction are highly limited. In this work, weformally define and introduce the category of social influence dialogue systemsthat influence users' cognitive and emotional responses, leading to changes inthoughts, opinions, and behaviors through natural conversations. We present asurvey of various tasks, datasets, and methods, compiling the progress acrossseven diverse domains. We discuss the commonalities and differences between theexamined systems, identify limitations, and recommend future directions. Thisstudy serves as a comprehensive reference for social influence dialogue systemsto inspire more dedicated research and discussion in this emerging area.
