Residual stress engineering is very widely used in the design of new advancedlightweight materials. For metallic glasses the attention has been onstructural changes and rejuvenation processes. High energy scanning X-raydiffraction strain mapping reveals large elastic fluctuations in metallicglasses after deformation under triaxial compression. Microindentation hardnessmapping hints to a competing hardening-softening mechanism after compressionand further reveals the complementary effects of stress and structuremodulation. Transmission electron microscopy proves that structure modulationunder room temperature deformation relates to the shear band formation thatclosely correlates to the distribution of elastic heterogeneities. Moleculardynamics simulations provide an atomistic understanding of the complex shearband activity in notched metallic glasses and the related fluctuations in thestrain/stress heterogeneity. Thus, future focus should be given to stressengineering and elastic heterogeneity that together with structure modulationmay allow to design metallic glasses with enhanced ductility and strainhardening ability.
