We bridge an essential knowledge gap on the understanding of all-opticalultrafast switching in ferrimagnets; namely, the connection between atomisticspin dynamics methods and macroscopic phenomenological models. All-opticalswitching of the magnetization occurs after the application of a singlefemtosecond laser pulse to specific ferrimagnetic compounds. This strongexcitation puts the involved degrees of freedom, electrons, lattice and spinsout-of-equilibrium between each other. Atomistic spin models havequantitatively described all-optical switching in a wide range of experimentalconditions, while having failed to provide a simple picture of the switchingprocess. Phenomenological models are able to qualitatively describe thedynamics of the switching process. However, a unified theoretical framework ismissing that describes the element-specific spin dynamics as atomistic spinmodels with the simplicity of phenomenology. Here, we bridge this gap andpresent an element-specific macrospin dynamical model which fully agrees withatomistic spin dynamics simulations and symmetry considerations of thephenomenological models.
