The study of representations is of fundamental importance to any form ofcommunication, and our ability to exploit them effectively is paramount. Thisarticle presents a novel theory -- Representational Systems Theory -- that isdesigned to abstractly encode a wide variety of representations from three coreperspectives: syntax, entailment, and their properties. By introducing theconcept of a construction space, we are able to encode each of these corecomponents under a single, unifying paradigm. Using our RepresentationalSystems Theory, it becomes possible to structurally transform representationsin one system into representations in another. An intrinsic facet of ourstructural transformation technique is representation selection based onproperties that representations possess, such as their relative cognitiveeffectiveness or structural complexity. A major theoretical barrier toproviding general structural transformation techniques is a lack of terminatingalgorithms. Representational Systems Theory permits the derivation of partialtransformations when no terminating algorithm can produce a fulltransformation. Since Representational Systems Theory provides a universalapproach to encoding representational systems, a further key barrier iseliminated: the need to devise system-specific structural transformationalgorithms, that are necessary when different systems adopt differentformalisation approaches. Consequently, Representational Systems Theory is thefirst general framework that provides a unified approach to encodingrepresentations, supports representation selection via structuraltransformations, and has the potential for widespread practical application.
