The space-time of the Universe has been perturbed under a scalar field $\phi$considering the minimum coupling between {\phi} and the background metric. Thesolutions of Einstein field equations have been obtained under perturbedgeometry and the corresponding conservation equation shows the non-equilibriumthermodynamic prescription of the cosmic fluid. Following the stabilitycriteria of the cosmic fluid along with the laws of thermodynamics, someconstraints have been imposed on the choice of $\phi$.
