Phase coarsening is a fundamental process of microstructure evolution inmultiphase materials. A thorough understanding of its kinetics is of greatsignificance for material processing and performance. Generally, coarsening canbe divided into the transient stage and the steady stage. Compared with steadycoarsening kinetics, the current understanding of transient coarsening israther limited and contradictory. In the present work, a new framework in thedimensionless Lifshitz-Slyozov-Wagner space is developed to study transientcoarsening kinetics co-controlled by interface migration/reaction and matrixdiffusion, where the dynamic equation for individual particles is derived fromthe thermodynamic extremal principle.
