As a common practice, the direction of natural gas flow in every pipeline isdetermined ex-ante for simplification purposes, and treated as a givenparameter within the scheduling problem. However, in integrated gas andelectric power networks with a large share of intermittent renewable powersupply, it is no longer straightforward to optimally predetermine the gas flowdirections. A wrong predetermination of gas flow directions may result infeasible but not necessarily optimal schedules. We propose a mixed-integerlinear optimization model to determine the optimal gas flow directions whilescheduling the system. This unlocks additional flexibility to power systems,provided that a tight coordination between power and gas systems exists. Theincreased flexibility, although it comes at the cost of increased computationalcomplexity, is quantified by comparing the total operational cost of the entiresystem with bidirectional gas flows as opposed to unidirectional gas flows. Wenumerically show that modeling gas flow directions as state variables may bringadded value not only in the meshed but also in the radial gas networks.
