The Planck scale is usually believed to be an unpassable wall. Putting acutoff there and thinking of it as a quantized spacetime entity shows that.However, this is exactly the cause of many problems in quantum gravity. Thecosmological constant problem also comes down to the problem of how to describea trans-Planckian world by a continuum theory that shall be renormalizable andbackground free. Here, we show that when quantizing gravity in adiffeomorphism-invariant method, in which background freedom arisesasymptotically as an exact conformal symmetry, the zero-point energy vanishesidentically. Thus, there is no problem with the cosmological constant, which isa physical constant, namely a renormalization group invariant. We also arguethat new quanta based on the background freedom emerge and spacetime isdiscretized dynamically. Primordial fluctuations will originate from suchquanta.
