We consider a spatially extended mesoscopic FitzHugh-Nagumo model with stronglocal interactions and prove that its asymptotic limit converges towards theclassical nonlocal reaction-diffusion FitzHugh-Nagumo system. As the localinteractions strongly dominate, the weak solution to the mesoscopic equationunder consideration converges to the local equilibrium, which has the form ofDirac distribution concentrated to an averaged membrane potential. Our approachis based on techniques widely developed in kinetic theory (Wassersteindistance, relative entropy method), where macroscopic quantities of themesoscopic model are compared with the solution to the nonlocalreaction-diffusion system. This approach allows to make the rigorous linkbetween microscopic and reaction-diffusion models.
