As adoption of blockchain-based systems grows, more attention is being givento privacy of these systems. Early systems like BitCoin provided few privacyfeatures. As a result, systems with strong privacy guarantees, includingMonero, Zcash, and MimbleWimble have been developed. Compared to BitCoin, thesecryptocurrencies are much less understood. In this paper, we focus onMimbleWimble, which uses the Dandelion++ protocol for private transaction relayand transaction aggregation to provide transaction content privacy. We findthat in combination these two features make MimbleWimble susceptible to a newtype of denial-of-service attacks. We design, prototype, and evaluate thisattack on the Beam network using a private test network and a networksimulator. We find that by controlling only 10% of the network nodes, theadversary can prevent over 45% of all transactions from ending up in theblockchain. We also discuss several potential approaches for mitigating thisattack.
