Virtual topologies in peer-to-peer networks can reduce the traffic consumedby altering the logical connectivity of peers without altering the underlyingnetwork. However, such sparsely connected virtual topologies do not focus onthe needs for smart grid applications, which is information disseminationthroughout the network, and in turn degrade the performance of distributedcontrol algorithms running on peer-to-peer networks. This paper provides aflexible solution for application developers to prototype and deploy differentvirtual topologies that balances these trade-offs. First, it introduces aconfigurable virtual communication topology framework, TopLinkMgr, whichenables users to specify any chosen connectivity configuration and deploypeer-to-peer applications using it. Second, it proposes a novel fault-tolerantself-adaptive virtual topology management algorithm, Bounded PathDissemination, that can ensure the dissemination of information to all peerswithin a specified threshold. Experiments show that the algorithm improves onconvergence speed and accuracy over state-of-the-art methods and is also robustagainst node failures while consuming significantly less communicationbandwidth.
