This paper presents a novel strategy for the synchronization ofgrid-following Voltage Source Converters (VSCs) in power systems with lowrotational inertia. The proposed synchronization unit is based on emulating thephysical properties of an induction machine and capitalizes on its inherentgrid-friendly properties such as self-synchronization, oscillation damping, andstandalone capabilities. To this end, the mathematical model of an inductionmachine is analyzed and reformulated to obtain the unknown grid frequency byprocessing the voltage and current measurements at the converter output. Thiseliminates the need for a Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) unit, traditionally employedin grid-following VSC control schemes, while simultaneously preserving thesystem- and device-level control. Furthermore, we provide the appropriate stepsfor obtaining an index-1 DAE representation of the induction-machine-basedsynchronization unit, suitable for stability analysis. Our analysis shows thatreplacing the PLL unit with the virtual induction machine-based synchronizationmay considerably improve the stability of systems with grid-followingconverters and facilitate the frequency containment. Furthermore, we validatethe performance of the proposed synchronization unit through simulations andprovide recommendations for its tuning.
