Background and Objective: The role of red blood cell dynamics is emphasisedin certain cardiovascular diseases, and thus needs to be closely studied. Amultiphase model of blood flow allows the resolution of locally varying densityof red blood cells within a complex vessel geometrical domain, and haemodynamicconsequences of such build up. Methods: A novel computational fluid dynamicssolver for simulating multiphase flows is used for modelling blood flow usinglevel set for a sharp interface representation. Single-phase simulations andreduced order models are used for pressure comparisons. The new solver is usedfor numerically studying AHA type B lesions. The impact of hematocrit anddegree of stenosis on the haemodynamics of coronary arteries is investigated.Results: The comparisons with single-phase flow simulations indicatedifferences in pressure when considering red blood cell aggregation. Multiphasesimulations provide slightly lower pressure drop for the same stenosis severitycompared to the single-phase simulations. Secondary flow patterns and theinteractions between the two phases leads to the red blood cell aggregation atthe end of the diastole cycle, which significantly changes the red blood celldistribution, the shear stresses and velocity in tubular lesions. Conclusions:Neither pressure drop nor mean velocity are not strongly changed in themultiphase modelling, but particle buildup significantly changes which is onlyrevealed by the multiphase approach.
