This paper tackles the problem of single-user multiple-input multiple-outputcommunication with 1-bit digital-to-analog and analog-to-digital converters.With the information-theoretic capacity as benchmark, the complementarystrategies of beamforming and equiprobable signaling are contrasted in theregimes of operational interest, and the ensuing spectral efficiencies arecharacterized. Various canonical channel types are considered, with emphasis online-of-sight settings under both spherical and planar wavefronts, respectivelyrepresentative of short and long transmission ranges at mmWave and terahertzfrequencies. In all cases, a judicious combination of beamforming andequiprobable signaling is shown to operate within a modest gap from capacity.
