The central goal of this study is to advance the state-of-the-art in thefield of water network management for industrial ecologies. Considering theglobal water shortage and environmental regulations, the reduction of waterconsumption has become a necessity within the industrial sector. To find theoptimal water management strategies in an eco-industrial park (EIP), a refinedsuperstructure is proposed. An MINLP mathematical model is then developed,based on the superstructure, to synthesize water and wastewater streams withinthe network, including nearby companies. Surveying two case studies, eachstudied in two different scenarios, showed that the cost objective functionsdeteriorates with increase in number of design periods. Results also providesome evidence of a trade-off between water network flexibility and performance,and vice versa.
