Identifying the intrinsic and extrinsic origins of magneto-transport inspin-orbit coupled systems has long been a central theme in condensed matterphysics. However, it has been elusive owing to the lack of an appropriateexperimental tool. In this work, using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy, weunambiguously disentangle the intrinsic and extrinsic contributions to theanisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) of a permalloy film. We find that thescattering-independent intrinsic contribution to AMR is sizable and is as largeas the scattering-dependent extrinsic contribution to AMR. Moreover, theportion of intrinsic contribution to total AMR increases with increasingtemperature due to the reduction of extrinsic contribution. Furtherinvestigation reveals that the reduction of extrinsic contribution is caused bythe phonon/magnon-induced negative AMR. Our result will stimulate furtherresearches on other spin-orbit-interaction-induced phenomena for whichidentifying the intrinsic and extrinsic contributions is important.
