The size of drops generated by the capillary-driven disintegration of liquidligaments plays a fundamental role in several important natural phenomena,ranging from heat and mass transfer at the ocean-atmosphere interface topathogen transmission. The inherent non-linearity of the equations governingthe ligament destabilization lead to significant differences in the resultingdrop sizes, owing to small fluctuations in the myriad initial conditions.Previous experiments and simulations reveal a variety of drop sizedistributions, corresponding to competing underlying physical interpretations.Here, we perform numerical simulations of individual ligaments, thedeterministic breakup of which is triggered by random initial surfacecorrugations. Stochasticity is incorporated by simulating a large ensemble ofsuch ligaments, each realization corresponding to a random but unique initialconfiguration. The resulting probability distributions reveal three stable dropsizes, generated via a sequence of two distinct stages of breakup. Theprobability of the large sizes is described by volume-weighted Poisson andLog-Normal distributions for the first and second breakup stages, respectively.The study demonstrates a precisely controllable and reproducible framework,which can be employed to investigate the mechanisms responsible for thepolydispersity in drop sizes found in complex fluid fragmentation scenarios.
