Understanding of sedimentation dynamics of particles in bounded fluids is ofcrucial importance for a wide variety of processes. While there is profoundknowledge base regarding the sedimentation of rigid solid particles, thefundamental principles of sedimentation dynamics of elastic, nonheavy spheresin bounded fluids are not well understood. Therefore, we performedsedimentation of deformable, elastic solid spheres with particle Reynoldsnumbers much smaller than 1 in a model experiment. The spheres started fromrest in a rectangular duct with a width of about 23 times the radius R of thesphere. The particle dynamics of elastic spheres differed fundamentally fromthat of rigid spheres. Elastic effects were found to take place oncomparatively large time scales, such that elastic spheres underwent fourphases of sedimentation. Phases I and II, including transient acceleration anda short steady velocity plateau, are comparable with sedimentation of rigidspheres. From a characteristic onset position of about 10R, deformabilityeffects kick in and a second acceleration appears (phase III). In the fourthphase, the deformable spheres reach the terminal sedimentation velocity. Thesofter the spheres are, the higher the terminal velocity is. In the presentsetup, a terminal velocity up to 9 percent higher than the velocity forcomparable rigid spheres was reached. By means of the obtained data, insightsinto the dynamics are given that could serve as basic approaches for modellingthe dynamics of elastic spheres in bounded fluids.
