Latent alignment objectives such as CTC and AXE significantly improvenon-autoregressive machine translation models. Can they improve autoregressivemodels as well? We explore the possibility of training autoregressive machinetranslation models with latent alignment objectives, and observe that, inpractice, this approach results in degenerate models. We provide a theoreticalexplanation for these empirical results, and prove that latent alignmentobjectives are incompatible with teacher forcing.
