Metasurfaces, composed of subwavelength scattering elements, havedemonstrated remarkable control over the transmitted amplitude, phase, andpolarization of light. However, manipulating the amplitude upon transmissionhas required loss if a single metasurface is used. Here, we describehigh-efficiency independent manipulation of the amplitude and phase of a beamusing two lossless phase-only metasurfaces separated by a distance. With thisconfiguration, we experimentally demonstrate optical components such ascombined beam-forming and splitting devices, as well as those for formingcomplex-valued, three-dimensional holograms. The compound meta-optic platformprovides a promising approach for achieving high performance opticalholographic displays and compact optical components, while exhibiting a highoverall efficiency.
