Testing of autonomous systems is extremely important as many of them are bothsafety-critical and security-critical. The architecture and mechanism of suchsystems are fundamentally different from traditional control software, whichappears to operate in more structured environments and are explicitlyinstructed according to the system design and implementation. To gain a betterunderstanding of autonomous systems practice and facilitate research on testingof such systems, we conducted an exploratory study by synthesizing academicliterature with a focus group discussion and interviews with industrypractitioners. Based on thematic analysis of the data, we provide aconceptualization of autonomous systems, classifications of challenges andcurrent practices as well as of available techniques and approaches for testingof autonomous systems. Our findings also indicate that more research effortsare required for testing of autonomous systems to improve both the quality andsafety aspects of such systems.
