If we take the subjective character of consciousness seriously, consciousnessbecomes a matter of "being" rather than "doing". Because "doing" can bedissociated from "being", functional criteria alone are insufficient to decidewhether a system possesses the necessary requirements for being a physicalsubstrate of consciousness.
