The optical responses of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides aredominated by excitons. Being able to strongly interact with light and othermaterials excitations, excitons in semiconductors are prototypes forinvestigating many-particle and strong-field physics, includingexciton-exciton, exciton-photon, and exciton-phonon interactions. Strongexciton-photon interactions, in particular, can lead to the emergence ofexciton-polariton hybrid quasiparticles with peculiar characteristics, and atendency toward macroscopic and spontaneous coherence. Normally, far-field andnear-field optical spectroscopy techniques are used to investigateexciton-photon interactions. Here, we demonstrate that the radiation generatedby moving electrons in transition metal dichalcogenides, namely Cherenkovradiation, can strongly interact with excitons. We investigate the coherenceproperties and spectral signatures of exciton-photon interactions in TMDC bulkcrystals, using cathodoluminescence spectroscopy. Our findings lay the groundfor cathodoluminescence spectroscopy and in particular electron-beam techniquesas probes of exciton-polariton spontaneous coherence in semiconductors, beyondthe well-known plasmonic investigations.

Strong Interaction of Cherenkov Radiation with Excitons in WSe2 Crystals
