In-vivo, real-time study of the local and collective cellular biomechanicalresponses requires the fine and selective manipulation of the cellularenvironment. One innovative pathway is the use of photoactive bio-substratessuch as azobenzene-containing materials, which exhibit spectacularphotomechanical properties, to optically trigger the local, mechanicalstimulation of cells. Excited cells exhibit spectacular morphologicalmodifications and area shrinkage, which are dependent on the illumination. Thisdemonstrates the capabilities of photomechanically active substrates to studythe phenomena resulting from the mechanical interaction of cells with theirenvironment.
