Understanding the origins of collective, fluid-like behavior inultrarelativistic nuclear collisions constitutes one of the biggest openchallenges in the field. In this Letter, it is argued that certain features inthe multiplicity dependence of the source sizes extracted using pioninterferometry may be understood quite naturally if small systems evolvehydrodynamically at sufficiently large multiplicities. Interferometry maytherefore provide a baseline for probing and constraining the nature ofcollective behavior in nuclear collisions.
