Accounting for sex and gender is a challenge in social science research.While other methodology papers consider issues surrounding appropriatemeasurement, we consider the problem of adjustment for survey nonresponse andgeneralization from samples to populations in the context of the recent pushtoward measuring sex or gender as a non-binary construct. This is challengingnot only in that response categories differ between sex and gender measurement,but also in that both these attributes are potentially multidimensional. Wereflect on similarities to measuring race/ethnicity before considering theethical and statistical implications of the options available to us. We presenta simulation study to understand the statistical implications under a varietyof scenarios, and demonstrate the application of the decision process with theNew York City Poverty Tracker. Overall, we conclude not with a single bestrecommendation for all surveys but rather with an awareness of the complexityof the problem and the benefits and weaknesses of different approaches.
