Acoustic-resolution optoacoustic microscopy (AR-OAM) retrieves anatomical andfunctional contrast from living tissues at depths not reachable with opticalmicroscopy. The imaging performance of AR-OAM has been advanced with imagereconstruction algorithms providing high lateral resolution ultimately limitedby acoustic diffraction. In this work, we suggest a new model-based frameworkefficiently exploiting scanning symmetries for high-resolution reconstructionof AR-OAM images. The model accurately accounts for the spatial impulseresponse and large detection bandwidth of a spherical polyvinylidene difluoridesensor, which facilitates significantly outperforming synthetic aperturefocusing technique commonly employed in AR-OAM image reconstruction in terms ofimage contrast and resolution. Furthermore, reconstructions based on L1-normregularization enabled resolving structures indistinguishable with othermethods, which was confirmed by numerical simulations as well as phantom and invivo experiments. The achieved performance demonstrates the applicability ofAR-OAM as a super-resolution imaging method capable of breaking through thelimits imposed by acoustic diffraction, thus opening unprecedented capabilitiesfor the microscopic interrogation of optically opaque tissues in preclinicaland clinical studies.
