We numerically investigate sound damping in a model of granular materials intwo dimensions. We simulate evolution of standing waves in disorderedfrictionless disks and analyze their damped oscillations by velocityautocorrelation functions and power spectra. We control the strength ofinelastic interactions between the disks in contact to examine the effect ofenergy dissipation on sound characteristics of disordered systems. Increasingthe strength of inelastic interactions, we find that (i) sound softeningvanishes and (ii) sound attenuation due to configurational disorder, i.e. theRayleigh scattering at low frequencies and disorder-induced broadening at highfrequencies, is completely dominated by the energy dissipation. Our findingssuggest that sound damping in granular media is determined by the interplaybetween elastic heterogeneities and inelastic interactions.
