Our high expectations from Internet of Things (IoT) and how it willpositively influence our lifestyles depend on a secure and trustedimplementation of it, especially in the sensitive sectors such as health orfinancial. IoT platforms and solutions must provide Confidentiality, Integrityand Availability (CIA) in a secure and transparent way. Due to the extremelylarge scales of IoT, traditional centralized solutions for securityprovisioning cannot be employed in their original form. This article discussesthe authentication problem in IoT, which is fundamental to providing CIA. Wepropose a hierarchical security architecture for this problem and focus oncomputationally lightweight authentication protocols which can intelligentlydistribute the computational load across multiple levels and effectively pushthe load towards upper layers.
