DNA-mediated multivalent interactions between colloidal particles have beenextensively applied for their ability to program bulk phase behaviour anddynamic processes. Exploiting the competition between different types ofDNA-DNA bonds, here we experimentally demonstrate the selective triggering ofcolloidal self-assembly in the presence of a functionalised surface, whichinduces changes in particle-particle interactions. Besides its relevance to themanufacturing of layered materials with controlled thickness, the intrinsicsignal-amplification features of the proposed interaction scheme make itvaluable for biosensing applications.
