Patterning the wettability of solid surfaces is a successful strategy tocontrol the dropwise condensation of vapor onto partially wetting solidsurfaces. We followed the condensation of water vapor ontoelectrowetting-functionalized surfaces with structured co-planar electrodes. Adetailed analysis of the experimental distribution of millions of drops revealsthat despite the presence of contact angle hysteresis and the occurrence ofrandom drop coalescence events, the preferential drop position closely followsthe evolution of the local minima of the numerically calculated dropsize-dependent electrostatic energy landscape in two dimensions. Even subtletransitions between competing preferred locations are properly reproduced bythe model. Based on this quantitative understanding of the condensationpatterns, we discuss a series of important follow-up steps that need to betaken to demonstrate a reliable performance gain in various applicationsfocusing in particular on enhanced heat transfer.
