Recognition of every word is accomplished by close collaboration of bottom-upsub-word and word recognition neural networks with top-down cognitive wordcontext expectations. The utility of this context appropriate collaboration issubstantial savings in recognition time, accuracy and cortical neuralprocessing resources. Repetition priming, the simplest form of contextfacilitation, has been studied extensively, but behavioral and cognitiveneuroscience research has failed to produce a common shared model. Facilitationis attributed to temporary lowered word recognition thresholds. Recent fMRIevidence identifies frontal, prefrontal, left temporal cortex interactions asthe source of this priming bias. Five experiments presented here clearlydemonstrate that word recognition facilitation is a bias effect. Context-BiasedFast Accurate Recognition, a recurrent neural network model, shows how thisanticipatory bias is accomplished by interactions among top-down conceptualcognitive networks and bottom-up lexical word recognition networks. Signaldetection theory says that this facilitation bias is offset by the cost ofmiss-recognizing similar, but different words. However, the prime typicallycreates a temporary time-space recognition window within which probability ofprime recurrence is substantially raised paradoxically transforming bias intosensitivity.
