Future wireless communication system embraces physical-layer signal detectionwith high sensitivity, especially in the microwave photon level. Currently, thereceiver primarily adopts the signal detection based on semi-conductor devicesfor signal detection, while this paper introduces high-sensitivity photon-levelmicrowave detection based on superconducting structure. We first overviewexisting works on the photon-level communication in the optical spectrum aswell as the microwave photon-level sensing based on superconducting structurein both theoretical and experimental perspectives, including microwavedetection circuit model based on Josephson junction, microwave photon counterbased on Josephson junction, and two reconstruction approaches under backgroundnoise. In addition, we characterize channel modeling based on two differentmicrowave photon detection approaches, including the absorption barrier and thedual-path Handury Brown-Twiss (HBT) experiments, and predict the correspondingachievable rates. According to the performance prediction, it is seen that themicrowave photon-level signal detection can increase the receiver sensitivitycompared with the state-of-the-art standardized communication system withwaveform signal reception, with gain over $10$dB.
