How well do current combat helmets protect against Traumatic Brain Injury? Toanswer this question it is necessary to evaluate both the measures andstandards of protection. We define measure as a physical test that the helmetmust be subject to and the standard as the quantitative threshold ofperformance in this test that the helmet must satisfy to be acceptable. We findthat both the measures are inadequate and the standards are too low. Currentcombat helmets simply do not protect against TBI effectively as they have notbeen designed to do so. We explain this inadequacy of combat helmet protectionagainst TBI, and how the situation can be dramatically improved both in theshort and long term.
