A triangular optical cavity is often used as a mode cleaning cavity inprecision laser interferometry such as gravitational wave detectors. Analignment sensing and control system for maintaining the alignment of a modecleaning cavity with respect to the incoming laser beam is critical fordetector's performance. Therefore, understanding the behavior of the angularresponse is vital to both design and commissioning test of the alignmentcontrol system. We present a linear approximation approach which not onlysimplifies the computation but also provides a comprehensive picture of theangular response. The observable degrees of freedom in a triangular cavity isdiscussed based on the linear approximation.
