We report here metal to insulator transition, colossal Seebeck coefficientand ultralow thermal conductivity (0.0057th of its bulk value, significantlysmaller than many well-known thermoelectric materials and silicon, showingpotential applications in thermoelectrics, electronics and photonics for heatdissipation) in monodispersed well characterized Ni nanoparticles. As aconsequence, thermoelectric power factor and figure of merit are significantlyenhanced compared to their bulk counterpart. Interestingly, a systematiccrossover from metallic to semiconducting to finally electrically insulatingbehavior, large negative temperature coefficient of resistance and n-typeconduction to p-type conduction with decrease in particle size have beenobserved. These results are mainly attributed to formation of metal/organicinterfaces, enhancement in local electronic density of sates and multiscaleelectron and phonon scattering by various defects. Thus, this study will open anew avenue to make better thermoelectrics through incorporation of suchnanoparticles in semiconducting hosts.
