Numerical simulations of high-speed forming and welding are of significantinterest to industry, but are challenging due to the coupled physics anddynamic nature of the processes. With the advancement in hardware andcomputational capabilities, the next generation of computational methods, socalled meshless methods, have received significant attention. Among allmeshless methods, smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) has received majorconsideration. The main advantage of the SPH method is to bypass therequirement for a numerical grid to calculate spatial derivatives. This avoidssevere problems associated with mesh tangling and distortion which usuallyoccur in Lagrangian analysis involving high-strain-rate events. In this studyto better understand the effects of oxide layer, coating and diffused materialson weldability, a novel hybrid SPH platform was developed. Then, the high-speedimpact between Steel/Steel, Copper/Titanium, and Aluminum/Steel were simulated.To experimentally validate the numerical efforts, results were compared tovaporizing foil actuator welding and explosive welding tests. Good agreementbetween the numerical simulations and experimental results provided confidencein the numerical modeling.
