Halide perovskites have remarkable properties for relatively crudelyprocessed semiconductors, including large optical absorption coefficients andlong charge carrier lifetimes. Thanks to such properties, these materials arenow competing with established technologies for use in cost-effective andefficient light harvesting and light emitting devices. Nevertheless, ourfundamental understanding of the behaviour of charge carriers in thesematerials particularly on the nano to micro scale has on the whole laggedbehind the empirical device performances. Such understanding is essential tocontrol charge carriers, exploit new device structures, and push devices totheir performance limits. Among other tools, optical microscopy andspectroscopic techniques have revealed rich information about charge carrierrecombination and transport on important length scales. In this ProgressReport, we detail the contribution of time-resolved optical microscopytechniques to our collective understanding of the photophysics of thesematerials. We discuss ongoing technical developments in the field that areovercoming traditional experimental limitations in order to visualise transportproperties over multiple time and length scales. Finally, we propose strategiesto combine optical microscopy with complementary techniques in order to obtaina holistic picture of local carrier photophysics in state of the art perovskitedevices.
