In this report, several control strategies for microgrids with renewableenergy resources and battery energy storage systems are proposed. Renewableenergy has the potential to reduce global carbon emissions, while higherpenetration of renewable energy is hindered by the inherent variability andintermittency of renewable resources. This motivates the development ofmicrogrids supplied by renewable energy resources. With proper control ofstorage units and communications with the energy market, the non-dispatchableenergy can be regulated to reduce the difficulty of power scheduling in thegrid operation. Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are widely used to makerenewable energy more controllable and usable on demand. With suitableprediction techniques and control algorithms, BESS can store part of thegenerated renewable energy and supply some stored energy at different periods,so that the actual power dispatched can meet the required operating criteria.The control algorithms introduced in this report are developed to maximize theprofit and minimize the energy cost in microgrids, which require predicted dataon renewable power, temperature, electricity price, and load demand.
