Slime mould plasmodia can adjust their behaviour in response to chemicaltrails left by themselves and other Physarum plasmodia. This simple feedbackprocess increases their foraging efficiency. We still do not know whether otherfactors influence plasmodium behaviour in realistic competition settings. Herewe designed a competition experiment where two plasmodia had to find one foodsource in a common environment. As previously shown, the time it took plasmodiato find food depended on their hunger motivation. However, the time it took aplasmodium to start looking for food depended on its motivation and themotivation of its competitor. Plasmodia always initiated foraging quicker ifthey were in the presence of a competitor and the quickest if they were hungryand in the presence of a satiated competitor. The time it took to arrive to thefood was not influenced by whether they were alone or with a competitor.Ultimately, this complex competition response benefited the hungry plasmodia asthey had a 4:1 chance of finding the food first. The sensory ecology ofPhysarum polycephalum is more complex than previously thought and yieldscomplex behaviour in a simple organism.
