Infrared (IR) technologies have become increasingly relevant as they offer awide range of applications, from thermal imaging to chemical and biologicalvibrational spectroscopy. Substrate materials, such as calcium fluoride andzinc selenide, are commonly used for IR optics. Unfortunately, they aretypically fragile, hygroscopic and expensive, thus producing potential problemsduring device fabrication and in the long-term functional operation. Here, weintroduce yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) ceramic as a flexible and stableplatform to implement next generation IR nano-optic devices. In particular, wehave combined YSZ with metallic nano-structures and graphene to demonstrate newplasmonics, polarizers and transparent heating substrates. The proposedYSZ-based platforms enable high temperature processing that also withstandharsh environments because of its excellent mechanical, thermal and chemicalstability. In addition to the functional capability of making foldable andbendable devices, the demonstrated mechanical flexibility offers thepossibility of roll-to-roll processing for low cost and large scale fabricationprocesses. Our work offers compelling evidence that ultrathin YSZ is a uniquesubstrate for IR applications, given all the combined features, includingmechanical flexibility, durability, transparency and easy processing, which arenot available from other available material alternatives.
