Smart and IoT-enabled mobile devices have the potential to enhance healthcareservices for both patients and healthcare providers. Human computer interactiondesign is key to realizing a useful and usable connection between the users andthese smart healthcare technologies. Appropriate design of such devicesenhances the usability, improves effective operation in an integratedhealthcare system, and facilitates the collaboration and information sharingbetween patients, healthcare providers, and institutions. In this paper, theconcept of smart healthcare is introduced, including its four-layer informationarchitecture of sensing, communication, data integration, and application.Human Computer Interaction design principles for smart healthcare mobiledevices are outlined, based on user-centered design. These include: ensuringsafety, providing error-resistant displays and alarms, supporting the uniquerelationship between patients and healthcare providers, distinguishing end-usergroups, accommodating legacy devices, guaranteeing low latency, allowing forpersonalization, and ensuring patient privacy. Results are synthesized indesign suggestions ranging from personas, scenarios, workflow, and informationarchitecture, to prototyping, testing and iterative development. Finally,future developments in smart healthcare and Human Computer Interaction designfor mobile health devices are outlined.

Human Computer Interaction Design for Mobile Devices Based on a Smart Healthcare Architecture
