The viscoelastic properties of arterial tissue dictate vessel behavior incertain disease states, injury modalities, and during some endovascularprocedures. In this study, we characterized the viscoelastic mechanicalresponse of porcine abdominal aortic tissue via uniaxial mechanical experimentson vascular tissue samples coupled with full-field surface strain measurementsusing the 2-D digital image correlation (DIC) technique. The measured stressrelaxation response and intimal surface strain field were used to identifymaterial parameters for a proposed viscoelastic anisotropic (VA) constitutivemodel of the passive arterial wall. The obtained results show that the VAconstitutive model is able to capture the viscoelastic mechanical behavior ofthe arterial tissue over clinically-relevant time scales. The identifiedmaterial model and numerical simulations provide a comprehensive description ofthe passive viscoelastic tissue properties of the arterial wall, and aquantitative understanding of the spatial and directional variabilityunderlying arterial tissue mechanical behavior.
