This article presents a suite of new control designs for next-generationelectric smart grids. The future grid will consist of thousands ofnon-conventional renewable generation sources such as wind, solar, and energystorage. These new components are collectively referred to as distributedenergy resources (DER). The article presents a comprehensive list of dynamicmodels for DERs, and shows their coupling with the conventional generators andloads. It then presents several innovative control designs that can be used forfacilitating large-scale DER integration. Ideas from decentralized retrofitcontrol and distributed sparsity-promoting optimal control are used fordeveloping these designs, followed by illustrations on an IEEE power systemtest model.
